PR director Dave Karraker leaving Sony
Dave Karraker, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications for Sony Computer Entertainment America, has announced that he'll be leaving the company on Friday to take a position with Skyy Spirits. In an email to Joystiq and other media outlets, Karraker wrote, "I imagine you media sleuths will be unearthing this news soon, so I wanted to send you a personal email to let you know I have made the very difficult decision to leave Sony. I am saddened to leave such a great group of people, but I have been presented a global opportunity near my home in an industry where I have previous experience that I feel I must pursue."Karraker has been our go-to guy on Sony stuff since last September. Entering into some less than optimal circumstances, he's always managed to answer our questions while sailing the previously iceberg-bound Sony PR ship to calmer waters. We'll miss you, Dave.

Skyy Spirits? Are those the guys that stock the airlines with mini bottles of booze?
J-Guy @ Sep 5th 2007 2:33PM
Sony was having PR problems before. Let's just hope it doesn't get worse from now on.
Jonah Falcon @ Sep 5th 2007 2:35PM
Dave shouldn't have edited the Halo 3 Wikipedia entry. :p

"Nothing is F*@Ked? NOTHING IS F^@KED? THE GOD DAMN PLANE IS CRASHED INTO THE MOUNTAIN!" - your free wed. Big Lebowski quote.
Jonah Falcon @ Sep 5th 2007 2:36PM
Maybe it'll get better without him.

Considering Dave Karracker was responsible for the following clusterfucks...
-Blacklisting Kotaku scandal
-Offering $1200 to anyone who could find a PS3 on store shelves in March
-Stating any gamer out there wants a PS3.
I mean, hell, considering a vast majority of the negative shit spinning out of Sony was from Karraker or Kuturugi, his leaving is a good thing.
Now we can only hope that british bald badass Phil Harrison steps in charge. I really like how straight a shooter that fellow has been.
sheppy @ Sep 6th 2007 8:16AM
Oooops. that payout thing was Jack Tretton.
Donald @ Sep 6th 2007 8:19AM
Wasn't Jack Tretton the one who offered $1200 for the PS3?
I know that's who I mailed a bill for $9600 to...
RoboChamp @ Sep 5th 2007 2:36PM
[Insert random ignorant reason for his departure having to do with the PS3 failing lolololol11!ll here]
Good luck to him.

no love for the heads up ... damn
Todd @ Sep 5th 2007 2:39PM
He wasn't there for very long. I wonder if he was happy being at Sony.
hvnlysoldr @ Sep 5th 2007 2:43PM
Is there something on his teeth? Is that why he left?
Mr. P @ Sep 5th 2007 2:50PM
Everyone's "leaving." Kutaragai, Allard, Moore, now this dude. Wonder who's next?
Christopher Grant @ Sep 5th 2007 3:21PM
Allard is still at Microsoft, and still in the same division of Entertainment & Devices. He's been working on the Zune project.
Slaziman @ Sep 5th 2007 4:18PM
Do you ever make actual comments instead of replies Grant? I've yet to see that avatar in it's full glory >:(

THOSE guys left after LONG SERVICE - and Katuragi didn't quit. He was "forcibly resigned" after being "horizontally reassigned".
Balla360 @ Sep 5th 2007 3:08PM
I also have previous experience with Skyy Vodka.
THE GOD OF WEB DEVs @ Sep 5th 2007 3:09PM
He looks weird in that picture!
T3H WICKERMAN @ Sep 5th 2007 3:11PM
you look weird in your picture. whats with that red hat with "M" on it? is ur name maurice or what? (nice moustache guy!)
Korova @ Sep 5th 2007 6:01PM
a bit cancerous, yes.
vidGuy @ Sep 5th 2007 3:08PM
He's leaving because he was disappointed with his corporate pic and the forced smile they made him wear.
E.J. @ Sep 5th 2007 3:11PM
I have to imagine that he's leaving because the people around him are morons. There's nothing like a corporate big wig opening his big fat mouth and making your job 100x harder than it already is.
Good luck to him and thanks for /trying/ to manage Sony PR. It's one hell of a mountain of a task.
konajinx @ Sep 5th 2007 3:15PM
Vodka is forever. PS3, not so much.
OnimushaSoki @ Sep 5th 2007 3:44PM
Sounds like a tag line for a new JAMES BOND movie. ;]

PS3 HAS A 10 YEARS LIFE SPAN!!! RAWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Slaziman @ Sep 5th 2007 4:10PM
ANOTHER NAIL IN THE PS3'S COFFIN
GLOOM AND DOOM!!!
Allen @ Sep 5th 2007 4:45PM
Is it a smooth transition from electronics and video games to vodka?
Matt @ Sep 5th 2007 5:20PM
Well, if you were Sony's PR man for a year, you'd probably want to get that close to so much vodka, too.
Hiroken @ Sep 5th 2007 5:55PM
As a long-time video game fan and a supporter of the PS3 (not a fanboy, I have 10 consoles in my apt...waaay too many) I can only say THANK GOD.
Hopefully the new PR guy will actually start, I don't know, talking to the gaming community? Giving us ads that don't depict consoles exploding into crows?
We can hope.

severian00 @ Sep 5th 2007 8:20PM
Actually if memory serves he came on after the ps3 launch and all those commercials. I don't think he was very involved in the day to day marketing. I believe he was more of the face of Sony and the guy that got the unlucky job of explaining away all the stupid comments by the higher ups. He was the guy in charge of spin basically.
Hiroken @ Sep 5th 2007 11:27PM
Well, shit.
Still...we can hope...?
